diagnosed with Leukemia.
UnbrokenJuly 21st is a day that Juliette will never forget. Torn away from a cherished annual beach vacation and stuck in a hospital full of strange smells and more medicine than she ever wanted nine-year-old Juliette Evans is diagnosed with Leukemia. She has to watch as her parents and family struggle to deal with their new life of having a child with cancer.
Juliette learns very quickly that life does not always follow the path you want it to, love is complicated, and pain is the enemy. Spinal taps, chemo shots, and weeks spent in the hospital force her to the sickening conclusion that she’ll never be normal again. While going through her treatment, Juliette makes friends with the nurses and other kids on her floor like Benjamin, a sixteen-year-old boy, who gives her tips and tricks on making it as a cancer patient. Even when magical wishes come true, Juliette’s joy is tinged with threat as her cancer fights back with a vengeance. Through her diary entries, Juliette shares everything from her blood work and medicines to her thoughts and dreams. Unpublished is an intimate look into the reality of battling childhood cancer, but Juliette is proof that optimism is the most powerful medicine there is. |
The story behind the story
UNBROKEN is a 93,000-word Fiction novel that I hope will not only provide a compelling story for all readers, but will also be a valuable source of information, comfort, and inspiration to families who have been affected by childhood cancer. As a Leukemia survivor Unbroken is particularly close to my heart. While I chose to share my journey through a fictional character, the dates, blood work, procedures, and many events are from my personal records and memories.
